DataStreme Water in the Earth System (WES) Online, is a distance-learning course for teachers which incorporates inquiry-based instructional strategies and a holistic concept of Earth from oceanic, atmospheric and terrestrial water and problem-focused perspectives. It is designed after the highly successful DataStreme Atmosphere course, and investigates the mass and energy flows associated with the global water cycle, and with related issues. The course is directed towards middle-school teachers, but open to all K-12 teachers.

Course participants will be prepared as DataStreme WES resource teachers. They will demonstrate, through investigations of the global water cycle, the value of Internet access to environmental information in classroom
applications. All teachers involved will be prepared to promote Earth system studies across the school curriculum in support of the National Science Education Standards.

The primary training of WES Resource Teachers takes place through their participation in the DataStreme WES distance-learning course.   The 13-week course is offered through WES Local Implementation Teams (LITs) that are located around the country. Most course work is completed independently, with three group meetings during the semester. To participate in the course, teachers must have access to a PC or Mac computer, printer, and an Internet connection with browsing capability. Participants must also have access to a conventional fax machine for weekly submission of written work.

This course will be offered in New Hampshire in the Spring '08 (January - May) semester.   The three group meetings will take place from 4 - 8 pm, on weekday evenings at Plymouth State University, at the beginning, middle and end of each semester. Participants will be enrolled in a 3 semester-hour graduate course, entitled ESC 636 Water Resources Topics, through the State University of New York College at Brockport.   Credit is awarded upon successfully completing course requirements the same semester as the course is taken. Tuition for the course is covered by the American Meteorological Society, and participants receive all course materials at no cost.

If you would like more information on this project, and/or are interested in becoming a participant for the Spring '08 semester, please see the DataStreme WES Web site at the following URL:
